The Queen’s Residence was converted to a B&B 14 months ago. The house is a gracious 1870 Colonial Revival, modified in the 1920’s from an Italianate. A grand veranda with massive columns was added to the house in the 20’s to give it more of a southern plantation look. The owners, Joe and Marla Queen, were careful to preserve the home’s structural integrity. They were able to take out closets to convert a half bath to a full bath for one of the guest rooms. The other two guestrooms already had full baths. The Queen’s have chosen to keep the common rooms on the main floor open for guest use as well as an upstairs library. Although the house has 5500 square feet, there are only the three guestrooms. Since none of the guestrooms have shared walls, privacy is maximized. Marla Queen has tastefully decorated the entire home in antiques with comfort and luxury in mind.

The Original 1700's Tavern was originally purchased by Charles Newton, the owner of the home in the 20’s and 30’s, for Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village. |
What makes this inn unique is the authentic Colonial tavern that is in the home’s lower level. This tavern is not open to the public, so guests can opt to order dinner in or share a drink together surrounded by history. The tavern is decorated with pewter, dried herbs and candles, enhancing the authenticity. There is a massive fireplace that is a real treat in the colder seasons. Walking into the Queen’s Residence Wild Turkey tavern is truly a step back in time. The Queen’s cater small private parties by reservation. For these parties, the owners dress in period costume, hire a Celtic harpist and serve period cuisine.
The tavern was originally purchased by Charles Newton, the owner of the home in the 20’s and 30’s, for Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village. Newton was a chief buyer of the properties for Greenfield Village, which is a living history museum in Dearborn, Michigan (just 30 minutes east of Ypsilanti). At the same time that Newton bought a tavern, Ford bought another one in Clinton, Michigan. Since Ford did not want more than one tavern in the village, he suggested that Newton install the one he bought in his home. Apparently, Ford brought his crew over and supervised the project himself.
Another feature of this inn is the outdoor hot tub which is located within a fenced private garden. Couples can share quality time here without interruption.
Conveniently located near Ann Arbor and metro Detroit, the small city of Ypsilanti boasts the second largest historic district in Michigan. The Queen’s Residence is within walking distance to the parks along the riverfront and to downtown restaurants and shops.
