Magic awaits at Getaway Cabins in the beautiful Hocking Hills of scenic southern Ohio. Enter the tranquil beauty of the woods and leave the world behind as you reconnect with nature.
Getaway Cabins captivates with the charms of each season. When snow covers the ground and waterfalls turns to frozen diamonds, the cabins are a cozy retreat. When spring flowers dot the hillsides and songbirds serenade from budding trees, the cabins are a glorious gathering spot. When lazy summer days bring a wealth of outdoor activities, the cabins are a restful oasis. When leaves take on the crimson and golden hues of autumn and the air nips with a delightful chill, the cabins are an enchanting haven.
“It’s hard to explain but there is something magical about the cabins,” says innkeeper Jennifer Mitchell. “They are a wonderful place to rekindle, refresh and spend time with each other.”
The cabin names evoke images of delightful days and nights nestled in the sheltering woods. There’s Sunflower Château, Butterfly Bungalow, Ladybug Loft, Honeybee Hideaway, Lakota Lodge, Waterfall Cabin, Whispering Woods, The Homestead and many more. Each of the 23 cabins has a hot tub and fireplace, queen-size bed, TV & VCR, ceiling fan, gas grill, air conditioning, bathroom and lounging area. But no two cabins are alike.
“They are all different,” Jennifer says. “They each have their own personality and character and are decorated according to a theme.”
Some guests like to try a different cabin each year. Others want the same special spot over and over again. “They can’t dream of leaving the one they have found to try another one,” Jennifer says. “You very much feel you are out in the woods and out in nature but you don’t have the discomforts of camping. You can relax in your hot tub and watch the deer and other wildlife around you.”
Some of the Getaway Cabins in South Bloomingville are secluded and off to themselves. Others are closer to accommodate family and friends traveling together. The original 1840s log cabin is now the location of the office and Misty Ridge Gift Shop. Each abode has full kitchen or kitchenette and gas grills for outdoor cooking. All towels, linens, cookware and utensils are provided.
Pets are welcome at specified cabins and the resident Black Lab named Bear is usually on hand to greet guests. Hocking Hills also is a pet-friendly destination and almost all of the area parks welcome pets. “We also now offer pet ‘vacation tags’ for guests to use on their pets during their stay,” Jennifer says. “That way if the unexpected occurs and a pet runs away, someone finding them has our contact information and can get in touch with us right away - rather than trying to reach the owner at home since this is the number most people have listed on their pet's tag.”
Surrounded by Hocking Hills State Park, Getaway Cabins is close to plenty of outdoor recreation. You can fish, canoe, cycle, hike, hunt, go rock climbing and rappelling and horseback riding, taking in the fabulous scenery along the way. Nearby Lake Hope and Lake Logan are popular spots. The 400-acre Lake Logan has abundant large mouth bass, bluegill, crappie, pike and catfish, along with a 530-foot beach for sunbathers and swimmers. Unique shops and intimate dining are also handy.
“One of the best things,” Jennifer says, “is how close we are to so many attractions. We are only an hour from Columbus.”
Several romantic indulgences are available if you want to add “something extra” to your stay. Roses, a professional massage in the privacy of your own cabin or a romantic dinner for two can be arranged. Watch a sumptuous dinner unfold before your eyes as it is prepared in your cabin by a gourmet chef. You will sit down to a delightful meal of lobster tail and tenderloin steak, complete with linen tablecloth, candlelight and a bottle of champagne or wine.
“It’s a wonderful way for a couple to spend time together, to focus on each other without the usual interruptions of the world, ” Jennifer says. “We’ve had guests come here whose marriages were in trouble and they spent time together and found that spark again.”
Jennifer and her husband Michael fully understand the unforgettable appeal of the lodgings in the woods. They were once guests in the cabins themselves. Both worked in the apartment business in Columbus, Ohio. Jennifer was in management and multi-site marketing. Michael was in maintenance and management.
“We stayed at the cabins every year for five years and we always looked forward to it,” Jennifer says.
In fact, the Mitchells were so intrigued by the site that they dreamed of one day moving to Hocking Hills and sharing such accommodations with guests. “When the previous owners decided to leave the business, we jumped at the chance,” Jennifer says. “It was a little sooner than we had expected, but we didn’t want to pass up such an opportunity.”
As owners of their little piece of heaven, the Mitchells gave the cabins names instead of numbers (“We had a contest to name them,” Jennifer says), then they changed the décor of each cabin and got ready to greet their guests. They have also begun adding new cabins. Four more are now under construction.
Their dream come true has been even more joyous than they expected. “We love what we are doing,” Jennifer says. “I can’t imagine doing anything other than this.”
